Agios Geórgios - Agios Sóstis - Panagía Faneroméni

Evaluation: When following this hike you will walk over gravel roads and in the beginning also alongside the asphalt road for about 10 minutes. The hike takes you to the south-east point of Antíparos, to the chapel of the Panagía Faneroméni. The environment is very striking because of the peculiar rocks, modelled by the wind. For a decent beach you then have to walk back for about 25 minutes, until you reach the beach of Agios Sóstis. This hike gets an evaluation of **.

Estimated time: The actual walking time from Dolphin Apartments to the beach of Agios Sóstis is about one hour; it will then take you another 25 minutes to the chapel of the Panagía Faneroméni. You have to walk for 25 more minutes to arrive back at the beach of Agios Sóstis , which means that the total actual walking time mounts to 1h50.
We walked from 10am to 12.30pm, a total walking time of two and a half hours.
The car of Dolphin Apartments came to fetch us at Agios Sóstis.

Route description: (0h00) Leaving from Dolphin Apartments you take a right for a short while, until you reach the crossing. You then go up directly to the right, on a track. After a little over 5 minutes you arrive at the asphalt road, where you take a right. You follow this gradually rising road for about 10 minutes, with on your right a few pretty holiday cottages. You remain on the asphalt road, passing a couple of side-roads.

(0h15) After 10 minutes on the asphalt road, in the second curve to the left, and under an electricity cable, you take the stony gravel road off the right. You curve to the left, but after 3 minutes you get to a junction and you go straight ahead and up, on a rust-coloured gravel road. After 2 minutes you reach another junction, where you take a right.
You approach a kind of pass and you keep going up, with a great panoramic view on Despotikó.

(0h25) Some 5 minutes later you arrive at the pass, with on your left a beautiful view on Páros, Náxos and the Small Cyclades (with Irakliá on the right). On your right you can see Despotikó with behind it Poliégos (left) and Sífnos (right). When you reach a junction you take a left and you go up for another 3 minutes – on a very stony road, which draws a straight line through the green hills. You have a nice view on this part of Antíparos, with on your left the hill where the cave of Agios Ioánnis is situated, and with even more to the left the high summit of the Profítis Ilías.

The road to Agios Sóstis and the Panagía Faneroméni.

A few minutes later, the road becomes flat again, or slightly rising; you curve to the right gradually, with on your left a marvellous view on Páros and many islands in the strait – you can also see the island of Ios just opposite. You curve even more to the right and while going up you can now see the sea in front of you, with on the right Folégandros and on the left Síkinos. The continuation of the road meanders down, far away in front of you.

(0h41) After some 10 minutes descending gradually on a very stony road, you reach a long wall, where you turn to the left. This seeming useless road descends gradually, on the left of a very green and narrow valley. In front of you, you notice two bays, but your road continues in front of you, on the long hill crest, with the island of Ios behind it.

(0h53) After yet another 12 minutes you arrive at a very obvious crossing, where you take a right. Some 7-8 minutes later you get right next to the water of the beautiful bay of Agios Sóstis . You also pass a number of other, smaller beaches.

(1h04) When you get to a road off the right with the sign "Private", you take a left, obviously, and you thus follow the water side of the bay. Further on you curve to the right, away from the beach, but when you arrive at a junction, you take a left directly. You now climb on the final cape and after about 7 minutes you thus reach a side-road. In front of you, there are fields and to the right you notice a few large, newly built houses.

(1h11) You go left here, on a kind of flat plateau; you then walk slightly up and down, for a fair number of minutes. The road meanders and the landscape is rolling – you walk straight to the south, with the island of Síkinos in front of you. In this way, you walk along the entire south-east peninsula of Antíparos . Finally, the chapel of the Panagía Faneroméni appears in front of you.

(1h26) This rather new chapel (which is closed) is the final destination of this hike. You might want to explore the surroundings a bit more; there are a few striking rock formations, which are eroded by the wind.

Unfortunately, though, there is no beach at the end of our hike.
To find a beach you have to walk back for 25 minutes: when reaching the new houses, you have to take a right, of course, and in this way you can walk to the 3rd beach, which is also the largest beach – the beach of Agios Sóstis . It is situated a little past the turn to the private domains (sign "private").
This is a nice sandy beach, with a few trees to provide shade – when sitting on the stones under the trees you can enjoy your picnic. (1h51)
